QUIZ!
Raise money for a donkey ambulance in Afghanistan
In memory of a former student at York university’s Centre for Applied Human Rights
Frozan Ali from Afghanistan died in Liverpool in 2013 after graduating from York University. She had been granted asylum in the UK in 2013 following threats to her life in Afghanistan due to her work for Afghan women but died from a chronic medical condition not long afterwards. Frozan would no doubt be a great supporter of the “donkey ambulance”.
Pregnant women in some areas of Afghanistan face a difficult decision when they go into labour: either to deliver at home in unhygienic conditions without immediate access to medical expertise, or to travel in all weathers up to four hours by donkey over mountainous terrain to the health centre. Until recently, many women risked their and their babies’ lives by opting for home births because the long trip involved sitting on a hard saddle between sacks of straw.
Then HealthProm, a UK development organization, came along (All quiz money raised will go to them.) They designed this “donkey ambulance” with an inflatable saddle allowing pregnant women to travel to the health centre safely and comfortably. This low-cost solution is noticeably reducing maternal and infant mortality in remote areas of Afghanistan.
