A Public Meeting on Wednesday, March 4th

At 7.30pm, at the Quaker Meeting House, Friargate,

York, YO1 9RL

The guest speaker will be the Israeli/British Activist

Advocacy Officer for the Israeli Committee against House Demolitions

Ruth Edmonds has lived in Israel/Palestine on and off for 16 years. She will speak from her extensive experience as an Israeli Jewish activist, struggling against the Israeli occupation of Palestine (see over for more information).

Ruth is the Advocacy Officer for the Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions , an Israeli human rights and peace organisation dedicated to ending the prolonged Israeli Occupation over the Palestinians (www.icahd.org).

Ruth has also been active in a number of other prominent Israel human rights organizations including Anarchists Against the Wall(http://www.awalls.org), Boycott From Within, an organization of Israelis who support boycott divestment and sanctions against Israel and New Profile, the feminist movement for the de-militarization of Israeli Society (http://www.newprofile.org/). She has also worked with the Alternative Information Center (AIC), a joint Palestinian-Israeli organisation promoting justice, equality and peace for Palestinians and Israelis (www.alternativenews.org), the Palestinian/Israeli photography collective, Active Stills (www.activestills.org) and the  Ma’an  Development Agency, a Palestinian training and development institution (www.maan-ctr.org) . Ruth is currently focusing on organizing a Training for Transformation programme in the region.

Her Talk

Ruth will explain the complex maze of infrastructure (the ‘facts on the ground’), the laws, military orders and Kafkaesque bureaucracy that maintains the Israeli occupation of Palestine. She will also cover the subject of Global Palestine and how Israel is exporting the occupation and its security infrastructure to other countries, including the UK. She will also address the following questions:

Where are we headed? What does a just peace mean? , What needs to happen to ensure justice for Palestine? What do the Israeli elections hold for a just equal future? And, finally, what we can do to support the Palestinian struggle for freedom, justice and equal rights?

This meeting has been arranged by the York Branch of the Palestine Solidarity Campaign and the University of York Palestinian Solidarity Society. Contact us at  info@yorkpsc.org.uk

Immigrants didn't cause the crisis!

When Amal and her friends took on the government over a classmate under threat of deportation, little did she know that her group, the Glasgow Girls anti-deportation campaign would end up being a musical. A passionate voice against rising racism and resentment of refugees and immigrants, she’s headlining York Stand Up To UKIP’s pre-election campaign public meeting on Tuesday 10th March. Joining her will be three local Parliamentary Candidates.

Come hear Amal Azzudin’s story and launch our anti-UKIP campaign

The meeting starts at 7.30pm at Friends Meeting House, Friargate, YO1 9RL. Also speaking are general election candidates Rachel Maskell (Labour), Megan Ollerhead (TUSC) and Jonathan Tyler (Green), plus Karen Miller of York TUC and Professor Simon Parker of Refugee Action York and a lecturer in politics at the University of York. It promises to be a great night, celebrating the presence of migrants in our communities and looking to challenge the rise of xenophobia in today’s political debate.

Mar 23 – Mar 29 all-day
Leeds March for the NHS
Mar 28 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

All across Yorkshire for the NHS

Hello Jess,
We’re making Saturday March 28th a big day for NHS supporters in our region. In York, we’ll be assembling at 9.30am in King’s Square and marching across the city centre to Leeman Road Memorial Gardens. Following on, those who can will be taking a coach to Leeds to join a much bigger march with people from across Yorkshire (see image above).

Book your coach seat today for a £5 deposit

Thanks to support from UNITE the Union, we’re able to refund the £5 coach ticket to people on the day (unfortunately we can’t refund the 95p booking fee). But that means we need to fill it! The coach will leave at 10.15am, once the march has arrived, and will feed us straight into the Leeds march.

The issues couldn’t be clearer: we need to cancel disasterous PFI deals, scrap TTIP, roll back the Health and Social Care Act, refuse to put services out to tender and tackle low pay and under-staffing.

With parties talking up immigration and benefits crackdowns, there’s a risk of the NHS sliding down the agenda. That will play directly into the hands of the Tories, letting them off the hook for everything they’ve done. We can’t just leave it up to Labour – every one of us has to do our bit!
