Leeds March for the NHS
Mar 28 @ 11:30 am – 12:30 pm

All across Yorkshire for the NHS

Hello Jess,
We’re making Saturday March 28th a big day for NHS supporters in our region. In York, we’ll be assembling at 9.30am in King’s Square and marching across the city centre to Leeman Road Memorial Gardens. Following on, those who can will be taking a coach to Leeds to join a much bigger march with people from across Yorkshire (see image above).

Book your coach seat today for a £5 deposit

Thanks to support from UNITE the Union, we’re able to refund the £5 coach ticket to people on the day (unfortunately we can’t refund the 95p booking fee). But that means we need to fill it! The coach will leave at 10.15am, once the march has arrived, and will feed us straight into the Leeds march.

The issues couldn’t be clearer: we need to cancel disasterous PFI deals, scrap TTIP, roll back the Health and Social Care Act, refuse to put services out to tender and tackle low pay and under-staffing.

With parties talking up immigration and benefits crackdowns, there’s a risk of the NHS sliding down the agenda. That will play directly into the hands of the Tories, letting them off the hook for everything they’ve done. We can’t just leave it up to Labour – every one of us has to do our bit!

York People’s Question Time

With Owen Jones, journalist and author

Election fever is setting in and the media are focused on a few narrow issues that suit their line. All the main parties remain committed to further cut after the elections; how do we make sure we have a movement with the best chance to stop them? We’re delighted to announce that Owen Jones will be joining us on Thursday April 2nd for the York People’s Question Time at 7pm at the Priory Street Centre.

Get your tickets here now!

I had the chance to attend the Manchester People’s Question Time, which featured Billy Bragg and PCS Union’s Mark Serwotka. The panel differed on plenty of details, but were united in their passion for a better world, whilst the audience drew on every experience of life. Despite the grim reality of austerity, it was the most positive public meeting I’ve attended in a long time, and I’m sure we in York can equal them if not do better!

We’ll be announcing more of the panel as soon as we can. We’re hoping for a full venue, so please spread the word. Tickets are £5 if you can and free if you can’t – we’re expecting to spend nearly £500 on this event so please pay if you can.

Make sure you’ve got a place – get your ticket now!

Yours,
Graham Martin

People’s Assembly
Jun 11 @ 6:00 pm

There’s no doubt about it. The June Demonstration is going to be BIG – but how do we make it bigger?

We’re calling for volunteers, supporters, individuals and groups to join us at our London-wide mobilising meeting on the 11th June, 6pm, at the NUT, Hamilton House, Mabledon Place, London WC1H 9BD! This gives us just 10 days to pull every trick out of the bag before the big event.
We’re going to need social media storms, fundraisers, banners painted, placards made, and some serious publicity to make sure we have the greatest impact possible. Passionate about the cause? Got skills or a bit of time to lend a hand? Then we need you!

Join us on 11th June @ 6pm. Please share and invite your friends to the event, and we’ll see you there: https://www.facebook.com/events/1640231022930170/

END AUSTERITY NOW
Jun 20 all-day
Public Demo against Austerity
Jun 20 @ 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

We’re pleased to announce that the ‘End Austerity Now’ national demonstration on Saturday 20 June will be marching from the Bank of England to Parliament Square.

End Austerity Now National Demonstration
Assemble: 12pm, Bank of England (Queen Victoria Street) – March to Parliament Square

web_flyer_20_jun.jpg

The demonstration will assemble in the heart of the City of London, right on the doorstep of the people who created the crisis in the first place. In our hundreds of thousands we’ll then march to Parliament to demand the politicians represent the views of the majority and not their mates in the city.

Nearly 60,000 people have already pledged to be there, trade unions and campaigns are mobilising, transport is being organised and action is taking place up and down the country.

We are currently updating the website with transport planned to the demo. Please do send us any coach details you have planned from your area so we can advertise on the site. If you can organise coaches from your area please get in touch.

Day of Action 30 May
The People’s Assembly have called a national day of action on Saturday 30 May to build for the 20 June demonstration. Protests, rallies, stalls, leafleting, public meetings and direct action will be taking place across the country. If you can organise something where you live please get in touch.

The website will be updated with details as they come in: Click here

Urgent appeal
This demonstration is more important than ever. It needs to be massive. We urgently need to raise funds to make sure we can reach as many people as possible.

We have launched an urgent appeal to all our supporters to make a donation. The more money we raise, the more coaches we can put on, meetings we can organise, leaflets we can print, and more people we can put on the streets.
No amount is too big or too small! Click here to donate

Protest Osborne’s Emergency Budget – 8 July nationwide
Jul 8 @ 5:30 pm

Stand together to say ‘No!’

George Osborne has decided we need an ‘Emergency’ Budget, after the mess he inherited from the last chancellor – himself!

We’ve been promised a slash-and-burn attack on welfare, education, health and more besides, to make up for the tax cuts he announced before the election.

Rally in Parliament Street: 5.30pm, Wednesday July 8th.

As details slip out, its clear that those already at the bottom of society will be pushed further to the margins, or worse. We’ll be holding our rally outside the branches of 3 of Britain’s biggest banks: Halifax, Barclay’s and (over the road) Lloyd’s.

Alongside People’s Assembly groups across Britain, we want to demonstrate the strength of feeling against austerity in our community. 250,000 marches in London, but now we want to bring the spirit of the march home to York with an open microphone rally (please keep it under a minute!).

Join us on Wednesday – and invite everyone you know in York!

Yours,
Graham Martin
York People’s Assembly

P.S. We’ll be putting the final touches on this event, as well as planning events around treatment of York’s homeless and charges at York Art Gallery at our meeting on Monday, 7.30pm in Friends Meeting House, York. Come early for an informal introduction to the group at 7pm.

EVENTS AROUND THE COUNTRY ….

The People's Assembly Against Austerity
Support for The People’s Assembly has surged since the ‘End Austerity Now’ demo on 20 June! New local groups are being set up across the country. Check our local groups page for one near you or if you can set one up where you live please get in touch with the office for advise and support.

We’re planning on keeping the momentum going with a National Day of Action on 8 July. George Osborne is announcing his emergency budget, so we’re calling nation wide protests. This is the second budget in just four months & it begs the question what was Osborne hiding in his last? Osborne plans £12 billion in cuts to welfare and a fresh round of austerity measures.

Also…
If you’re in London:
We’d like to welcome all Londoners that support the People’s Assembly to a London Wide Meeting – whether you volunteered, stewarded, made placards, or even just came on the 20 June demonstration – to come along to our next London-wide gathering. We’ll be thinking about how to build a huge presence in London, and sharing ideas on how to make our upcoming events as big as possible.

We thank you for your support and if you able, please set up a monthly donation to help us maintain a permanent opposition to austerity.

Stand with the People of Greece - Debt Relief Now!

1pm Saturday in St Helen’s Square

Group member Kevin writes, “After the appalling news about the new EU bailout affecting Greece, the need for a protest has never been more urgent. There will be a protest against the EU coup in Greece this Saturday 1pm in St Helen’s Square. Everyone who can attend is urged to be there to show Solidarity with the Greek Resistance. This has been pulled together quickly I know, but all groups in York that care about this topic surely would like to be a part of it and urge others to attend as well.”

Cameron in Crisis – March on Westminster – catch the bus here

YORK PEOPLE’S ASSEMBLY

Cameron in Crisis

We’ve been told that as a society, we can’t afford to invest in health, homes, jobs and education. We now know why. The same politicians telling us we can’t afford decent public services for all, are hiding their money away to avoid paying their share. The tidal wave of hashtags, petitions and images doing the rounds on social media is amazing, but its not enough by itself.

Let’s turn this frustration into a huge march on Westminster!

This Saturday, we have the chance to turn anger and frustration into real movement. We’ve sold 11 tickets in the last 2 days – if that keeps going, we’ll sell out the coach! What might have felt like ‘yet another anti-cuts demo’ is shaping up to be a huge, spirited refusal to accept Cameron’s tax dodging antics as somehow normal behaviour.Get your ticket here.

Over the last weekend, thousands assembled outside Downing Street on almost no notice. With people already travelling from all over the country, this Saturday is an amazing opportunity to raise the pressure and renew the debate about the kind of world we want to see. We hope you’ll come and be part of it.

Yours,
Graham Martin
