Not here, not in Greece, not anywhere

The people of Greece have voted in a government that is refusing to accept further austerity. We don’t know how this will end, but it could be the first nail in austerity’s coffin. As our City Council meets to agree another year of cutbacks and job losses, we want to stand in solidarity with the people of Greece.

We’ve held Council Budget Night protests before, but this year, we want to use the opportunity to show solidarity with the people and government of Greece. The need for solidarity is urgent – the pressures on the Greek government from ‘above’ are huge, and need to be met with pressure from ‘below’.

In recent weeks, thousands have gathered in cities around Europe, including London, to show support for the Greek people. If Greece is to continue to show an alternative, one that can eventually end the cycle of cuts in our own communities, they will need all the support we can give them.
